Stakeholder Leaders Respond

August 2012 Hubert Joly

left global hospitality travel conglomerate Carlson
to become CEO of Best Buy.

Communicating with Best Buy employees,

Joly implemented excellence in retail, betting on
big box showrooms, superior customer service; product selection. Advice, convenience, service in the middle of the retail apocalypse.

Leadership must respond to various stakeholders simultaneously, employees, customers, suppliers; communities in order to survive, thrive and grow. Why are you in business, who are you serving, while also making money.

Business thrive on purpose, people want

to be involved in something bigger than themselves.
The purpose of business is to contribute
to the common good. Business is a unique
“human organization” made of individuals
working together in support of a shared goal.

The goal must contribute to the common

good making a positive difference in people’s lives, a “noble purpose”. Therefore, making money is an imperative where profits are a result successful strategy rooted in purpose. Purpose pays.

The leader must articulate noble purpose through a vision rooted in reality. What the world needs, what the human beings in the organization buy in passionately about, what the company strength is and how can it earn a substantial ROI Return On Investment.

For example, Best Buy company purpose

is to enrich the lives of customers through technology by addressing key human needs
of communication, productivity and wellness.
An inspiring idea with deep meaning for human beings that also makes business sense.

Dynamically serving with noble purpose, tapping into growing markets, making noble purpose a cornerstone of strategy operations. Fueling growth through seeing broader

market opportunities, unleashing human magic.

Purpose and people matter most

in order to get through the tough times.
In the 2017 aftermath of the hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, the island’s electrical communications infrastructure was devastated. Homes destroyed, roads were impassible, hospitals overwhelmed.

Best Buy immediately organized a a cargo plane with emergency supplies. Best Buy gave employees cash to buy necessities, paid employees four weeks salary, while stores were closed. Over time Best Buy helped people piece their lives back together.

Remarkably within a year stores were back

in operation, plus year on year sales soared 10%,
In short, employees were allowed to help
each other through the trauma of hurricane Maria.

Leaders bring out the best in others.

Business does NOT exist in a vacuum,

business serves more than the share price.

In contrast to The Meritocracy Trap of Arch Patton’s top executive pay versus entry level moving from 20:1 to 500:1 pay scale,

plus Milton Friedman, Micheal Jensen idea that the sole purpose of a business is to maximize shareholder value. Perhaps markets have run their course and are out of steam? “Doing the same thing and expecting a different result” is the definition of insanity.

There is be a better way.
