During the great recession/financial crisis 

Arthur T. Demoulas (ATD) became CEO
chief executive officer of DeMoulas Super Markets, a century old family business where
a human being serves another human being.

“Blood makes you related,
But loyalty makes you family”

To begin with, ATD knew almost all of his employees on a first name basis. For example, when they were sick, ATD visited them in the hospital. Similarly, when a family member passed he attended the funeral. Moreover, when an employee got married ATD was at the wedding.

In six years, through distributive leadership the number of employees went from 14,000 to 25,000. 

Starting with $1.5Billion, revenue almost doubled.

June 23. 2014 conflicts in a century old family business came to a boiling point when the board
of directors fired ATD. Simultaneously, in solidarity, senior level managers resigned.
25,000 employees rallied for ATD’s reinstatement.
2Million shopped elsewhere
and brought their receipts to paste
on the windows to demonstrate sales lost.
Finally, August 27,2014 DeMoulas Super Markets reached an agreement to sell the
remaining 50.5% shares to ATD for $1.5Billion

DeMoulas Super Market continued to expand.

Today, DeMoulas Super Markets has 95 stores
in the four New England states of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine and Rhode Island.
